The Arizona Diamondbacks open spring training with the kind of realistic optimism they haven't known for years. The addition of Zack Greinke will do that. The Diamondbacks shocked the baseball world by signing the former Los Angeles Dodgers ace to a six-year, $206 million contract, then they further upgraded the rotation by acquiring Shelby Miller from the Atlanta Braves.

The Los Angeles Dodgers head to spring training in Arizona this week with a rookie manager, the usual high expectations and plenty of questions after another early playoff exit. Dave Roberts replaces Don Mattingly, who guided the Dodgers to three consecutive National League West titles, and the former major leaguer will oversee a roster that lost Zack Greinke to division rival Arizona, robbing Los Angeles of half of its one-two punch of Clayton Kershaw and Greinke. Making Greinke's loss worse was the Dodgers' failure to land any other big-name pitchers over the winter.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and free-agent second baseman Howie Kendrick have agreed to a $20 million, two-year contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. Kendrick batted .295 with nine home runs and 54 RBI last season, his first after the Dodgers acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels in December 2014. The 32-year-old infielder had turned down a $15.8 million, one-year qualifying offer from the team in November, leaving the Dodgers as the only club that could sign him without giving up a 2016 amateur draft pick as compensation.

The San Diego Padres have hired Hideo Nomo as an adviser to baseball operations to help expand their presence in the Pacific Rim. Nomo was the first Japanese player to permanently move to the big leagues, leading the way for more than 50 other players to follow. Last year, the Padres hired Moises Alou in a similar capacity, focusing on player development in the minor leagues, as well as continuing to expand the club's presence in Latin America.
