Lobo Howl Kicks Off '12-'13 Hoops Season PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Lopez

The annual Lobo Howl has always been about fun.

For the 2012-2013 Lobos and the 4,622 fans in attendance, tonight was no different.

The evening started with the Lady Lobos led by second-year Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez taking the court. They displayed some passing and shooting drills before finishing their night off with a very funny dance routine that featured songs from Michael Jackson, LMFAO and more.

The Lobos men’s basketball team took to the court next following a video montage of Steve Alford writing on a white board and finished with him writing – and underling – the words “Drive for five”, which has been coined as the ’12-’13 season motto. The phrase comes from the fact that the Lobos have won four conference championships in the last five seasons (three regular season and one conference tournament) and are in search of their fifth title in six years.

Like the women’s team, the men started with passing, shooting and layup drills. They then took part in a Cherry/Silver scrimmage. Cherry was made up of the projected starters Hugh Greenwood, Demetrius Walker, Kendall Williams, Tony Snell and Alex Kirk along with freshman Nick Banyard. Cherry went on to win 66-37 with Tony Snell chipping in a scrimmage-high 18 points.

“I think we took it really seriously,” sophomore guard Hugh Greenwood said about the scrimmage. “From the first minute we were really competitive. I thought the guys had fun… I thought the freshmen did a great job.”

Following the scrimmage, was the three-point contest featuring Tony Snell, Alex Kirk, Chad Adams, Kory Alford, Jamal Fenton, Demetrius Walker, Kendall Williams and Hugh Greenwood.

After a first round win over Chad Adams that had to go to a one-rack overtime, Kory Alford then took down Tony Snell and Kendall Williams en route to the three-point contest win.

“It was a lot of fun going against those guys. Especially Tony (Snell), he was my pick to win going into it,” Kory said.

The crowd then got to see some players participate in a slam dunk contest. The whole contest was a bit strange and was eventually won by Cameron Bairstow. The crowd really wanted Tony Snell to participate and after an extended “Tony” chant he did eventually attempt – and miss – four dunks.

Tonight was the fans’ last chance to get into the pit before New Mexico hosts Davidson exactly one month from today (November, 12th) at 11:59 p.m.

Lobos Set for Business Trip to Hawaii PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Lopez
Tuesday, 09 October 2012 11:53

As the Lobos get ready to visit Hawaii, Bob Davie has their mind in the right place. “This is totally a business trip,” Davie said. “I’m not one to let them go down to the beach for a couple hours or let them try and snorkel for a couple hours, I mean, this is all about us trying to win the fourth game of the year."

The surging Lobos (3-3, 0-1) travel to Honolulu with great momentum following their 35-14 drubbing of Texas State and their brilliant second half performance against Boise State the week prior. The Warriors of Hawaii (1-4, 0-2), however, are in the midst of a pretty rough patch.

Hawaii has dropped three straight and have allowed an average of 56 points during that stretch. They are looking to get a good crowd at Aloha Stadium for their homecoming game; a crowd that Bob Davie thinks can be a big factor.

“Their fans really do create a heck of an atmosphere,” he said. “When it starts going good for Hawaii in their stadium, it really starts rollin’ on you and that’s something we have to prepare for.”

For the third time this season – and the second straight game – the Lobos are favored to win. This is in large part due to the Lobos’ eighth ranked rushing attack. New Mexico is averaging an incredible 271.1 yards per game on the ground, while Hawaii’s 106th ranked rushing defense has surrendered 214.0 yards per game.

Still, though, during Tuesday’s media luncheon, Bob Davie told us that he believes Hawaii will force them into some passing situations. “They will force us to throw the ball more, I really believe that. They will come up man-to-man, pressed on us with more men in the box,” Davie said.

That will be interesting considering the Lobos have attempted just four passes in their last six quarters of football. But Davie is looking forward to the challenge of throwing the ball. “I think we’ve got some good receivers, we’ve practiced throwing the ball a lot. I think we are capable of throwing the football, I really do,” he added.

The game will be played Saturday at 10:00 p.m. local time (6:00 in HI) and is going to be televised on ROOT Sports Network (ch. 683 on DirecTV).

Davie, Lobos Realistic About Team; Ready to Play PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Lopez
Tuesday, 28 August 2012 10:44

Bob Davie met with the media Tuesday afternoon to talk about the Lobos' upcoming game against Southern on Saturday.

"Let's be honest, it's time for us to go play to see what kind of team we put on that field. I couldn't be more excited," Davie said.

We are all anxious to see what kind of team Bob Davie is going to put on the field. The practices have been cleaner, the players seem well disciplined and the community seems to be buying into Davie and company. All that being said, this team has won two games in the last two seasons -- no one knows exactly what to expect.

Bob Davie does have expectations, though.

"I expect us to be the most improved team in college football," Davie said. "I think it's a realistic goal."

Davie announced on Tuesday that senior B.R. Holbrook went through a symptom free practice on Monday and is expected to start at quarterback on Saturday.

He did, however, add that freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche will see playing time regardless of Holbrook's health. Getting Gautsche some playing time -- in every game, as Davie suggested is the plan -- is the right move for the Lobos. He is for all intensive purposes the future starter for UNM and nothing will help him develop his game more than getting in-game reps.

Davie did note that as of now Gautsche is a better runner than a thrower. With that being the case look for Gautsche to be involved in wild cat type of formations.

Perhaps the most interesting comments from Davie on Tuesday came when he was asked if his realistic, tempering of expectations approach throughout the offseason has affected the players' confidence.

When asked if he had a confident team, Davie said: "No."

"I have no agenda doing this (tempering expectations), I'm just being honest. Look at what our record has been; look how many players have left the program... I'm just being as honest as I can be," he added. "Based on the circumstances -- I think we have as confident as a team as we could have, because I know they've worked their butt off."

Lobos are Improved; Davie's not Satasfied PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Lopez
Tuesday, 04 September 2012 11:39

The New Mexico Lobos are fresh off a 66-21 trumping of Southern in their first game of the Bob Davie era, the Lobos' first opening day win since 2005.

Bob Davie, however, isn't overly impressed. At the Lobos' weekly press conference/luncheon on Tuesday Bob Davie addressed the media with the same humility that we have seen from him since day one.

"It has been a couple of frustrating couple days after looking at that tape. We don't look anything near like we should look," Davie said. "There is some things we should be better at right now and that's the things I want to see us improve on."

Davie isn't setting any kind of false expectations for the Lobos and their daunting back-to-back games at Texas then at Texas Tech. "We are going to get exposed," he said.

This is a process for the Lobos. Bob Davie took over a program that was at rock bottom when he entered the scene. Some Lobo fans will not want to hear Davie's realism fresh off a 66-21 win, but this approach is much better for the foundation of this program than setting unrealistic goals.

The Lobos' first-year coach noted throughout the press conference that he isn't so much worried about the final score or results, but rather the foundation that is being built.

"We all want it right now and it's not going to happen right now," said Davie.

That kind of mindset seems to be exactly what the Lobos needed. This season isn't going to be about what opponents do the the Lobos, but rather it's going to be what the Lobos do to the Lobos.

New Mexico didn't beat themselves against Southern, committing just one penalty and coming out of the game plus-four in the turnover ratio.

They will need similar success to be competitive against the Long Horns this coming Saturday.

The Texas vs. New Mexico game will not be televised locally, the university announced on Monday.

Final: Cubs 4, Isotopes 5 (Game Story with Notes and Quotes) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Lopez

Isotopes (8-8): 5

Cubs (7-9): 4

WP: Parisi (1-0)

LP: De La Cruz (0-1)

On the back of Mike Parisi's gem, the 'Topes recorded their first four-game sweep since 2009.

"Other than the inning they scored two runs, he was pretty much in command," Bundy said about Parisi. "That's a good hitting team -- Iowa -- and he was able to handle them."

The most impressive part of this winning streak hasn't been the high-octane offense we know so well, but rather the stellar pitching we have seen as of late.

Parisi was terrific from the get-go, retiring the first six batters he faced. He went on to toss seven innings while allowing just two runs on three hits.

"I threw some more fastballs tonight," Parisi said. "Once i'm able to command the fastball, my cutter is better.... the curveball is definitely my out pitch." His curveball was fantastic tonight. The times he chose to use it all seemed to be perfect, he completely fooled Anthony Rizzo on two occasions with his breaking pitch in the dirt.

The Isotopes right-hander fanned six on the night and surrendered just one walk.

Albquerque brought home three runs in the first, an inning in which they loaded the bases twice. Trent Oeltjen had the big hit of the frame, a two-run single.

They tacked a run in the fifth when Jerry Sands drove in Elian Herrera, who doubled earlier in the inning. They added one more in the seventh thanks to another Herrera double, this one drove in Luis Cruz.

Francisco Felix and Scott Rice tossed the eight and ninth innings, respectively. They both allowed one run, but limited damage to seal the win for the 'Topes.

The Isotopes fly out to Oklahoma City tomorrow at 7:20 A.M. to kick-off their four-game stint with the Redhawks. Michael Antonini will get the start for the 'Topes.

Elian Herrera has been terrific for the 'Topes. The leadoff man was 3-4 tonight, raising his average to .350.

Jerry Sands continues to make adjustments at the plate in hopes of turning the corner offensivley. He showed good plate discipline tonight, but was hitless.
